Number 80 in San Francisco has always had a special meaning for the city and the fans, ever since Rice was there it has been known only as his number, just like Montana's 16 or Ronnie Lott's 42, this number is one and only......... or is it?
The 49ers decided to sign 14 yr veteran receiver and third all time in receiving yards Isaac Bruce from the Rams as a free agent on 2008, only behind Tim Brown and the one and only Jerry Rice, but when the team was doing this signing, they knew the implications of bringing Bruce, he wears number 80 on his back...
A similar thing happened a while ago, when Mr. Rice went to play for the seahawks for one season, this team had already retired #80, this being Steve Largents number, but he himself decided to give Jerry the go ahead. Now, in San Francisco, Jerrys number has not even been retired, but he was faced with a familiar decision.
"I have always respected Isaac Bruce," Rice recently said on Sirius NFL Radio. "I don't know what is going to happen in that scenario but if it was left up to me I would say, 'Yeah.' For Steve Largent to do what he did for me he showed me a side of him where I just feel like I have to do the same thing. He set the standard. It would be left up to Isaac and myself to sit down and talk or if the 49ers decide to do something like that it is OK with me."
A truly incredible statement by this great NFL legend. I wonder if now after all this events, will the team decide to retire Jerrys Jersey, I guess now they will have to wait for Mr. Bruce to retire to do the ceremony. They have honored him every other way, except retiring his number.
Back in 2006, he was even signed back to the squad for one day just so he could retire a 49er, years after playing with the Raiders (2001-2004), Seahawks (2005) and the Broncos (2006) although this last one during the offseason only. The amount of this signing was $1,985,806.49, this figure being strictly ceremonial in that 1985 was the year he signed, 80 was his number, 06, the year he came back, and 49 for his team.
I really think this will have mixed feedback from 49er fans around the league, it is a true legendary number, that is being worn only by another legendary player, except... he is a division rival!!! Only a small amount of fans are expected to be happy with this decision, for now we still have to wait and see if Mr. Bruce decides to wear the number, he could always use another one...

We just got word that the Atlanta Falcons just cut 7 players off the team... funny #7 was Michael Vick's Number... a weird coincidence I should say...
The predictions for now are Alge Crumpler will land in the Seahawks... which I think Hasselbeck would love. And Leftwich as a backup to Tarvaris Jackson in Minnesota.
I have to say, as a Jaguar fan, I never liked Leftwich on our team since day one. When he couldnt even last two years on the falcons, we see he is not that good of a player like we were promised, I mean, the Falcons had Harrington and Leftwich and they remained with Harrington... WOW.
