Huge Rookie Contracts

One of the things I think the NFL should look very carefully is the huge and ridiculous contracts rookies are signing in the past few years.

I just heard that Falcons rookie QB Matt Ryan has signed a $72 million/6 year contract that included $34.75 million in guarantees. Less than a week before the draft, tackle Jake Long signed a five-year, $57.75 million deal with the Miami Dolphins.

These guys haven’t even set foot on the field… and they are getting paid like superstars, I think it’s really wrong… they haven’t prove anything yet… and they shouldn’t be paid more than players like Manning or Brady in their first contract, if after three or four years in the league they come in and prove something, then they get that big contract.

Veteran players don’t like these young guys getting paid more than them… and it could create some locker room issues… or do you expect that rookies that make 30 million would listen to others players?? or work as hard as the rest of the team??

These rookies not always become the superstars they are expected to be… and if they are getting paid these kinds of money, they could easily loose the motivation to be great… to exceed in the NFL.

I disagree... The reason they pay those salaries to athletes is related in large part to marketing... They make up those losses very quickly in merchandising and advertising... If Atlanta doesn't pay Matt Ryan that money someone else clearly will...

Even if they don't become superstars they're still profitable...

I still think its really stupid to leak all that money to someone who hasnt even played a down in the NFL and they are getting paid more than Manning or Brady...

Marketing or no marketing its a slap in the face to veteran players and could really be a bad omen for the lockerroom...
